Best at home hair highlight kit...?

Tommorow i'm going to Target and i wanna get a highlighting kit. Right now, my hair is a medium brownish color with lighter roots, random lighter chunks and a tint of red from previous coloring. I want to do blonde highlights but im not sure how they will take to the red? Does anyone know from experience if it will turn orange? Also, should i color the length of my hair for longer than the roots cause the roots are lighter? Ive died my hair many times, but never highlights. Any tips or advice would be great! Also, don't say go to a professional cause i don't have the money and yea, itll suck if it comes out bad but i'll live...
