Has anyone ever highlighted their hair at home?

Have any of you ever highlighted your hair at home??

I've been thinking about highlights but I can't afford to go to a salon and have it done professionly :(

I've had a look at a lot of youtube videos and stuff and it really doesnt seem THAT hard .. has anyone tried it?

Got any tips/advices??

I have dark brown (almost black) hair that I'm going to be dying a chestnut brown colour and then getting highlights.Has anyone ever highlighted their hair at home?
Yes I have and it wont break down the color as well, but if you do it at home, go wth Garnier or Revlon....It does a pretty good job, but again, it wont break down the color as well...but with your hair being so dark, you dont need bright white highlights anyway...it should look fine....condition it really good after youve done it...and have someone help you.

and use the Cap, NOT the foil...itll turn out alot better*Has anyone ever highlighted their hair at home?
Yes I have tried it.

I did it about 2 weeks ago.

The first time, I've used foil.. trust me, it's HARD AS HECK, and it's best if you got somebody else to help you.

To get the foil to stick on and do the whole head.. it's tough. =l

Not only that, but the color didn't stick on.

So after 3 days, I had to redye it. Instead, I used a trick called baliage. It was 20xs more easier, but more messier. And it gave me great highlights.

It just depends on what technique you use and how you do it. You can probably accomplish it. And remember - don't choose the wrong hair dye %26gt;%26lt;
I had it done at home. By my stepsister. Twice. I don't really have much tips or advice because my stepsister did it for me, but you should make sure you have them where you want them - and by that I mean if you want it up to the roots, make sure you get it there because my stepsister got it like 2 inches below the roots, and it didn't look good! :( But she fixed them which is a relief!
I have many times. I use the loreal paris champagne color. This is the box

I usually leave it in for a total of 50 min. However I check it at 30 min then every 5-10 min till I get the color I want. The longer you leave it in the lighter the blonde will be. Mine right now are a light golden blonde. Since your hair is darker it might take an hour for your hair. Just monitor it and when you re-highlight your hair just do the roots so you don't damage your hair. This isn't like dye and wont fade so you won't have to keep re-doing the hair you have already done. This comes with a cap so your highlights come out well like the ones on the box. If you use every hole it will come out like hers and if you use less holes then you won't have as much blonde in your hair. Its pretty self explanatory once you open the box.
i have tried it though it isnt as easy as you think it is if your a starter.just a tip,use semi permanent dye cuz you will certainly regret having permanent ones which will last FOREVER. oh and if i were you i would pick much more lighter colors like blonde or blue or green.

they seem cute. though if your a serious type of person then go for what you whish
ive tried it...its not that hard and it doesnt come out that bad but its a lot better to get it done at a salon.
to dye your hair is easy to do it on your own..but for your highlights its better if you ask someone to do them for you maybe your mother or sister...
You're going to want to bleach your hair first. Having (almost) black hair is really difficult to work with.
i have been dying my own hair at home since i was 13....i am now 27! i highlight my mothers hair once a month, my sisters hair and some of my friends! the tricky part won't be the dying it the chestnut brown. that's obvious you just put that on all of your head. but if you are going to go with highlights and your hair is ';naturally'; dark brown and you have never put color on it then it is better than if you have color on it that has made it that dark. to put highlights on hair that dark means if it's natural you have a MUCH better chance of achieving highlights. to highlight mean to take color out of your hair and to dye means to add it to you hair. so if you have color on your hair already, the bleach will have to stay on THAT MUCH LONGER to get through the dye and to the blonde...thus damaging your or leaving you with yellow highlights instead of blonde! never good! if i was you i wouldn't do you because you may end up at the salon having to fix it anyway or having your hair start to break off from the process...but if you're like me and you can't be told what not to do then here goes..... i would put a frosting cap on your head...you can get them at Sally's beauty supply, and i would make sure you had a highlighting kit that contains bleach, if it doesn't then your going yellow baby!!!! (since your hair is so dark) then i would pull it through and highlight it first, as heavy as you would like it. that way you don't have to do through the chestnut dye also.... then i would take the cap off and rinse, dry, and put another cap back on and highlight with the chestnut. that way you won't have a permanent and horrible growth line. the highlights let you get away with not redoing it as fast! when you put the cap on part your hair as normal, brush it and pull it straight down on your head. DO NOT brush your hair back...you will have gapped up places throughout your whole head!
