What tips do you have for highlighting my hair at home?

I've had my hair highlighted professionally, but I need to save some money by doing it at home. My mom is willing to help me and I've purchased an at-home kit with a cap to use.

It says to do a test with a strand of hair first so you know how long to leave the dye in. What other tips can you give me to do it the best way and get the best results? I have medium brown hair and have gotten blonde highlights for the last year and a half. What tips do you have for highlighting my hair at home?
The cap method is ok, but for at home I would recommend using foil. This way you can highlight whatever areas you want and use an everyday kitchen item to do it. Some people like to concentrate on the front and sides, not wanting as much underneath, and foil can easily do that. Here's a good link that shows how it's done.
