Highlighting my hair at home with a cap?

I have natural blonde hair as I get older my hair is getting darker underneath. I want to highlight my hair I bought a highlighting kit with a cap and hook. Do I comb my hair back or part it in the middle to get the effects I want?Highlighting my hair at home with a cap?
What are the effects you want?

One secret to doing hair with the cap is to slant the hook as opposed to going directly straight down to the root do it fast and quick....and do not go back in even if you don't think you have enough hair out of that particular hole....if you see a loop then only go into the middle of the loop and pull the rest of the hair out with the hook. If you do go back in and make a big hole in the cap you are going to have a big splotch of color seep through. After you are done with your head.....use a brush to untangle any tangles and lightly brush over the cap. Do the timing your instructions say to do and wet your head with the cap on ....add shampoo get a lather going and then untie the cap and it should come off real easy.....suds really help. As far as getting effects....most people brush backwards and hair stylists add a little powder to the hair before capping the head ....this helps hair come through the holes easier......if you make a mistake and pull through too much take the other end of the hook and slide it under the cap if you can reach it and just slide the hook to the hair and make it come out of the hole....Highlighting my hair at home with a cap?
Follow the directions in the box or something...IDK what youre talking about.=[
