the ONLY way to make sure your hair gets to the lightness you require is by going to the hairdressers. you see if your hair is currently coloured then you are trying to lighten it with bleach (bleach is intended for lightening NATURAL pigment, not unnatural) so there is every chance that after one lot of bleaching highlights they will process to orange / ginger. violet toner will not work on orange / ginger - its use is for hair lightened to the yellow / pale yellow stage - blue toner MAY counteract orange / ginger tones but it would have to be a permanent ASH colour.DARK DYED COLOURED HAIR! DARK DYED COLOURED HAIR! Whats the best way to highlight it at home without it going ginger or worse please?
Get yourself a highlighting cap, a highlight kit (I use Jerome Russel, it's pretty great) and some toner in the shade you want
Pull the parts you want highlighted through the holes in the cap (it'll usually come with instructions) then start at the *ends* as bleach processes faster near your roots due to the heat
If there's any orange tones you can get rid of them using a violet toner (usually sold as white) but if there aren't you can just go ahead and apply the toner in the shade you want
OMG don't. Honestly, I had dyed dark hair, bought a highlighting kit (after thorough research) and low and behold, Tony the frigging Tiger. The hairdresser nearly peed herself laughing. The problem is it would take at least 40% vol bleach to rid the hair of colour, the commercial product can't be that strong. So unless you want to resemble Mick Hucknall don't do it.
Buy Garnier Multi Lights kit, no mess no fuss, just brush it on. And make sure not to go for something too light. If you buy Norwegian Blonde or something similar you are bound to end up with something awful. A few shades lighter than your hair is now should work, you can build it up over time.
i wouldnt recommend it..
save up and go to the hairdressers. it always goes wrong when i try then i regret it for ages.
Bleach the spots you want to highlight first.
