Can I dye my highlighted hair at home?

I would like to save some money %26amp; try to dye my hair at home. My hair is dark blond, but have had highlights done for many years. I do have roots right now (you can see where the highlights start). My hair is long (halfway down my back). I've never dyed my hair before, so I'm a little scared! I just don't want to bother with the cost of highlights right now. I thought if I dyed my hair lighter, it would blend in, but I also don't want to ruin my hair. I think the highlighted parts may be a bit more porous? Any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks so much!!Can I dye my highlighted hair at home?
You could do it yourself, however I recommend you not bleach it. Bleaching your hair on your own, especially if you've never done it before, can cause a lot of damage to your hair and you could burn your scalp.

Some blonde box colours I love are Garnier 100% Colour (Extreme Ash Blonde and Extreme Beige Blonde are ones I use) and Clairol Herbal Essences in No.16 Knockout Blonde.

Since you've never done it, though, I'd say take it easy. Don't go more than 2 shades lighter than what you have, just incase you don't like it, and so that you don't damage your hair at all. Box blondes can be really hard to deal with, and can cause a lot of damage to your hair.

Since your hair is so long, if it's thick, you're going to need, best guess, between 3 and 5 boxes of dye. It might just be cheaper to go in and do it. Especially because it's thick. My hair falls about 6 inches past my shoulders and I take about 2 and a half batches of dye that I mix myself (I get it at Sally's, instead of box colour), and there's more in one of those batches than in a box.

I'd also recommend having somebody help you out. I've been doing hair for about 8 years and I still can't colour my own hair without missing random patches.

Another problem you can have with going lighter and doing it yourself is what stylists call the ';hot shaft'; and your ';new growth';. Your new growth is, obviously, whatever hair that's grown in that isn't coloured (roots), and the hot shaft is the 3/4'; closest to your scalp. That hair heats up the fastest and will process faster, so it may very well end up lighter than the rest of your hair. If you're already blonde, though, it shouldn't show up too much. It's more of a problem once you start getting from dark blonde into light brown.

I suggest the first time you have it done, go to a salon and do it. After that you can start touching it up on your own. There will be less you have to worry about and it will be easier for you to figure out what you're doing. Can I dye my highlighted hair at home?
At least a week or two before you dye your hair, make sure you leave it as dirty as possible. Also I would suggets that you deep condition your hair especially your ends. Do not shampoo it for nothing!!!. Also use a good hair dye like the Garnier lines. They do not stink for notthing or use the perfect 10 line. I wish you luck.
yeah you can, just dont get a crappy kind of highlights at the store. and if you scarced to temporary first youuu know termporay dye. then if you like it permaently die it =]
You can but make sure you read the instructions properly so you know what to do.
