Dying hair at home + highlights?

About 4-5 months ago I used semi-permant dye on my hair (medium/dark brown) Now its a light brown and my natural medium blonde is starting to show. I want to dye my hair blonde and then put an extra light blonde on top of it and then get white blonde highlights. Will this cover my brown and will it badly damage my hair or will it be fine so long as I use a weekly treatment on it and keep it conditioned. I am just worried about damaging my hair as I am trying to grow it. Any advice??Dying hair at home + highlights?
if you're talking about dyeing it blonde and extra light blonde then that's bleaching, and if you want an EXTRA light blonde on top of that...*shudders* ooh your hair won't like that. bleaching it all is one thing, but putting bleach on already bleached parts, that is BAD!

ok your questions:

it will cover your brown, but only if you use a good blonde tinter otherwise if you're bleaching from brown like this your hair WILL go orange. meaning you'd have to either get a good blonde tinter for after the bleaching OR bleach it twice which is SERIOUSLY not recommended.

YES IT WILL DAMAGE YOUR HAIR. it won't damage it MUCH if you just bleach it the once, (just make sure you don't leave the bleach on for too long and NEVER use heat or your hair will be reduced to a sort of gummy putty texture. it is irrepairable.)

if you bleach it twice then your hair WILL be very badly damaged. it is not uheard of for people who bleach hair more than once for their hair to thin and even fall out. it's not unheard of for people only bleaching it once.

it will NOT be fine if you use a weekly treatment. buy a professional deep repair hair masque, shampoo your hair, towel dry, put the hair masque on, wrap the hair in clingfilm (yes clingfilm) put a slightly damp towel in the microwave to warm it up, and wrap it around the clingfilm. leave this on for at least half an hour, but basically as long as you can. rinse the conditioner out. repeat daily until hair is in good condition. it may take weeks if you bleach on bleach.

O R !!

GO TO THE HAIRDRESSER, SPLASH OUT A BIT MORE AND GET A PROFESSIONAL TO DO IT! and they'll most probably say the same thing as me. doing highlights on yourself is impossible. doing them on other people is tricky enough.

let me put it this way, if you do it at home, you'll be paying the hairdresser twice the price to sort it all out that you would have paid in a salon if you had it done there in the first place.

i know i probably seem horrible now but i want to save you what i went through. i was acciginger ('accidental ginger' from bleaching) once, my hair is really thin and, only because my local sally's shop are so good, my hair is in good condition due to a hair masque. it is also in good condition due to the fact it is not in a pixie cut after i bleached it while still in a bob. i've coloured other people's hair too but i refuse to bleach it because it completely messes up the hair and there's a risk it can go orange.

i'm a lovely person really, but please don't kill your hair! if you insist, get a hairdresser to do it! please!

oh, and if you INSIST on doing it at home, when it goes orange, wash it with fairy liquid. i know it is weird but it takes the brassisness of the orange out so it isn't quite as orange. remember to condition.

Dying hair at home + highlights?
i am not saying this because i am a hairstylist trying to get people money i am saying this to save you time and money. do no do this yourself. anytime people try going blonde at home and then putting hi lites in, oh my gosh, never good.

first off because you will dye your hair all over blonde which may turn out fine, but if you still have semi permanent on there, the roots will turn blonde and then the rest won't do anything, second because to get white blonde hi lites on top of blonde dyed hair, you have to bleach it... home bleachings, never good. you will end up pulling your hair through a cap and getting spots everywhere when ur done.

do use a deep conditioner for awhile before dying your hair, but the semi permanent shouldn't have hurt it. you should be safe there. make sure to use a deep conditioner after also. if you have it professionally done, it won't hurt your hair as bad as if you did it yourself.

good luck :o)
Even though it will be more $$ I highly recommend going to a salon--especially for going blonde. Since your hair has grown out you could end up with lighter on the bottom where it was originally dyed. Highlights also are much better when done professionally. A hair stylist can also tell you how to care for your hair so you don't end up green or brassy or fried.
i did the same as you are considering doing and my hair is a similar natural colour mine went ginger so it was a dash to the salon the following morning, my advice... go to a proffesional.
Putting so much stress in your hair is not recommended, specially with cheap products. It's better if you have it done professionally because you might loose your hair if you do it yourself.
im sure your hair will be fine as long as you keep it well looked after and don't dye your hair for a while afterwards n im sure your hair will look great hope this helps

josie
i think you should go to a professional....it may cost more but it would be worth it....doing it at home goes wrong alot....as i have experienced! especially with blonde...hope this helps! x
