smells a bit harsh but product value is very reasonableHighlighting brown hair at home- best products?
I personally only use professional products for a few reasons: Less damage to the hair, better results and because I have access to prof. products. But I did go the drugstore route in my teens and have a feeling I know what you're doing... I'll make this short:
- If your hair is colored dark brown, the laws of color say that you cannot lift color with color. You can only deposit, meaning color over color will end up with a darker result. You must use some type of lightener (i.e. ';bleach';) to lift the color to change the level of color in your hair.
In all honesty, I think it's better to go to a salon to get your hair highlighted. The results will come out better. I've highlighted my hair several times, and have made some mistakes where I had to go to the salon to correct them.
If you don't want to use the frosting cap (which is meant for short hair), you can always just apply highlights on top part of your hair and streak them out.
As far as products go, if you don't have access to professional products, you can find them on ebay for about the same price as a brand such as L'oreal or Clairol.
well theres this thing called Sun-In and i believe you can get them at your local pharmacy [CVS] or at a grocery store [ShopeRIte]...i once had black hair, but after using it, it brought out my natural highlights and now my hairs this really pretty dark brown color!! but since your hairs naturally dark brown, your hair might turn the way you wanted it to; light brown/carmelish blondish colorr!!
[oh and its so easy to use too! all you need to do is spray, go out in the sun, and voila! you have ur natural highlights! loll ]
hope i helpped!
From what i gathered you have previously coloured hair? You cant use hair tint if you already have tint on it that is darker.
The rules is you cant lift (lighten) tint if its got tint on it. You cant just use tint, you will have to use bleach and just take it off when the colour suits (unless you want it white then i suggest you go to a hairdresser to avoid damage)
You cant put tint straight over bleach either, there are certain factors to consider. You could always visit your hair salon and ask for a quick consultation if they are not busy and they could give you advice, i dont know your hair, but your hairdresser will, im just saying from the rules that ive learnt.
Even if you go to a hairdressers ask them how to do it at home, they will only suggest you doing it with them if its potentially damaging. Other than that they should respect that you want to do it and give you advice.
From a colourist point of view id put my trust in a hairdresser as if you mess it up, colour correction will cost more.
If you want something you can buy at like Target that's simple, I've used Loreal and I've used Herbal Essences.
They both worked great just go look at the shades. Herbal Essences seemed to last longer and they give you a special applicator brush that makes it a lot easier for you to use. It doesn't smell and has less chemicals than others!
I used Loreal from Rite Aid for 6 bucks! It was on sale and it was the 1st time I died my hair and it didn't ruin it! Go with a tint of red for your hair...seriously! It's so pretty! That's what I got and I have dark brown hair too. It's not even red, it's more of a auburn lighter brown color..hard to explain!
When i do mine i use either revlon or garniere fructice they are both under $10.00 and look awesome!
