Highlighting my hair at home?

Ok so a while ago i went to the hairdressers and had red highlights put in my hair, this cost me 拢50 but i loved it so the price didn't bother me at the time. Little over a month later the highlights had pretty much faded into nothingness.

I don't really want to fork out 拢50 to have it done again if it's not going to last very long so i picked up a highlighting kit from the shops it's one of those paint on ones that comes with a brush. In the instructions it just says to paint the mixture onto the pieces of hair you want highlighted and then lay them back down but do I not need to cover them with foil or something like they do at the hairdressers so that the colour doesn't get onto other bits of my hair?

Sorry this is a bit of an essay any help would be greatly appreciated I really want my bright red highlights back.Highlighting my hair at home?
I think that you should cover the pieces of your hair with foil.Highlighting my hair at home?
I highlight my hair all time at home and i never cover the hair, the highlighting stuff is pretty thick so it doesnt go on the rest of the hair.
